When Mike has some alleged trouble with his bass
before the end ("Naaaaame") of MSO, Trey tells a lame
one during the equip break ("This is what we call
capit(o)l punishment."). Some people actually
Booooed (loudly), which I thought was pretty funny..
Fish says something like "You didn't come here for us
to tell jokes.." Trey is really active at the
opening of this MikeS. WOW!! During the MikeS there
is a serious "Walk This Way" jam from Trey. It is in
a different key, but it is clearly this Aerosmith
tune.. This is the coolest MikeS I have heard since
I've been reviewing these Grooves. This version
isn't run of the mill by any stretch. It is also one
of the last first set MikeSGrooves, btw (the last
being at the Vic Theater in early Dec 92, I think).
Instead of ending just after the 6 min point where
MikeSs of Olde often ended, this MikeS spirals into a
chaotic, snaky groove that made me reminisce about
the 11/22/94 Funky Bitch->JAM! People in the
audience were clearly excited by this turn of
events.. the jam involves a spin move around the same
theme, led by Trey. Everyone is really letting loose
on this at just over the 8 min point. The
characteristic Mikes Song jam ending returns at just
after 9 mins. Damn this MikeS was hot! H2 kicks in
at 9:36 or so, and it is really laid back and
beautiful (as usual) in the beginning. It creeps in
ever so steadily, though. Very magical H2.. I see
treetops of pine on a cloudy Autumn morning. This
version is very, very moving (much moreso than
usual). I am not high, folks.. this really is
sweet. There is a lot of improv around the H2 theme
from everyone, too, so it ain't a straight version.
Weekapaug kicks in at 13:35 or so, making the H2 the
longest I think I've reviewed. Mike is good in the
opening solo, but it isn't as tight or clever as it
could be. It is more off-key and eerie than usual,
and not snappy and quick. The jam is absolutely
awe-inspiring!!! Trey is f@cking on SPEED yet sounds
clear-headed.. this jam has more f@cking notes than
most Weekapaugs.. it is sooo beautiful that it could
be pre-planned (though isn't.. right?). Just
amazing. I hope EVERYONE has a chance to hear this
Weekapaug. This whole Groove, for that matter.
Tears of joy were nearly streaming down my face. It
is spectacular, even though the Week itself is
standard length. Total time is only 20:20, but this
is still fantastic. This is a more interesting
groove than 4/19/92 (which has received the highest
rating to date), but I don't know whether I can put
it over 4/19 without giving 4/19 (a melodic
masterpiece) another listen. 8.0 rating for this
whole MikeSGroove (A-) [Editor's note: this whole
Groove experience IS better than 4/19/92.].
Must-have, folks.. get it. Even though TMWSIY is
fudged, the Tweezer at this show is great (Alumni
hints!), and there's a Spin Doctors tease in the
Harpua (which was requested by many loud people in
the audience). Its a fun show..
