The band started *really* early for Phish: 8:15 for an 8:00 show (I've seen
them start as late as 8:50...) Suzy Greenberg started things off--a great
begining! Then one of the new ones (I assume that John Greene will post
a setlist, so I hereby absolve myself from that responsibility!)

Then Trey announces something like, "Last time we were in Keene, we debuted
four new songs: It's Ice, Brother, Sparkle and All Things Considered. Well,
we're not going to debut any new ones tonight, because we already did that
in Portsmouth. But we *are* going to dedicate a few songs to _____ (can't
remember the name...) He drove 18 hours to see us, and last year, he
drove to New Orleans, and the car broke down, then he tried to drive to
N.C. but the car broke down. (Awwww from audience) But now he's made it,
and we're going to give him a memorable evening and have one of these
bouncers throw his ass out now..." (They didn't throw him out 8^)

So anyway, the first set was hot, much hotter than the second, IMHO.
Highlights: Split Open and Melt (**THAT'S** how you jam!!!), Divided
Sky (I havenever been so impressed with Page's playing. Those of you
at upcoming shows--look for it. He's really improved over the years
that I have been watching the band.) In the middle of the Divided Sky,
during the quiet part, people were screaming and yelling like crazy-
I think that some of them had no idea that the song was *NOT* over,
so they were screaming, "Fluffhead! Cavern!" And so on. So Trey jumps
to the mic and screams "POSSUM!!!" Great! Excellent rip! Paul and
Silas was excellent, as was Cavern.

Well, looks like we have net-crossover with the list!

Anyway, here it is, 2:00 AM and I just returned from Keene.
Overall this show did not live up to the Portsmouth shows,
but with one MAJOR exception that I'll get to in a moment.
This show was very much like Portsmouth Friday, but with
a few curves thrown in: They opened with Suzy Greenberg, which
I haven't heard them play in a while, and NEVER opening with
it; they did a nice Split Open and Melt; Bathtub Gin is
always welcome; and I finally heard the new one Mind, which
is another Mike-oid C&W style tune. I also decided that I
like the song Mound MUCH better this tie than the first time
I heard it - much like It's Ice, it is growing on me.
They only did one musical cue tonight, which was one incident
of the Simpsons theme, and only about 3 other people seemed
to know what was going one and do the "DOHHHH!" with the band.
I was hoping for more. Oh, yes, SLOTH was a VERY nice addition.
Also, the 3/4 height VI Warshawski standee on Mike's amp not
only added a touch of class, but from the balcony it looked
exactly as if it was standing on Mike's shoulders. She also
helped out in the a capella Carolina. And Fishman sang a
new Syd Barret tune, Baby Lemonade, and played BAGPIPES,
which were fitted with a special attachment so he could hook
the vacuum cleaner up to them and play without expending any
of his precious oxygenic gases. All in all, pretty good show.

But the BIG surprise of the evening came at the end of set II,
I believe, when they whipped out a song I had considered
retired for years, one which I have been hoping to hear for
ages and asked Trey to play numerous times, to no avail.

Or so I thought. I could NOT believe it when they started in
and the words rolled around, the words I've been waiting to
hear live for about 2 years now...

"Sanity never came my way (came his way)..."

Yes, folks, that's right, they played SANITY!!!!!! It was the
slow version rather than the hopping one, and Trey sang the
lyrics out of order, but it was sanity nonetheless!!!!
Allison and I were jumping up and down beaming and shouting,
and we could hear James up in the balcony yelling "What the
F*CK????!!!!" A religious moment for a few of us, at least.

Anyway, it was a good show, and I SERIOUSLY envy all of you
who will be at the Flynn tomorrow night... I hear they are to
be shooting a video at the show! And say goodbye to Dennis and
the usual crew of security guys, 'coz after tomorrow night they
go on tour with M.C. Hammer, and Phish Phans will be subject
to the ravages of unfamiliar, unsympathetic security nazis.

yeah, it seemed like some people weren't aware that divided sky wasn't quite
over when it got really silent, as people were shouting out stuff; trey yelled
POSSUM! really loud into the mic in just the same way that people are constantly
yelling out names of tunes (perhaps he's quite sick of it?); then he snickered a
bit, and said "just kidding"; i thought it was kind of funny

Fishman playing the bagpipes and vacuum cleaner hooked up together (this was
quite an interesting sight); what will he think of next? i gather he's quite
fond of Syd Barrett; i heard some tape where he said he'd like to go thru his
whole repretoire

all things considered: it really starts to sound a lot like The Asse Festival
towards the end; perhaps All Things Considered -> Guelah Papyrus ? I think it
would go nicely

not having even heard of Phish back in the Nectars days, it was only a
coincidence that I had even heard of Sanity, as I was talking with Matt before
the show and he mentioned how he was dying to hear it (of course Matt's friend
standing 2 rows behind me totally flipping out when they started playing it was
also a clue that this was something out of the ordinary)

the new songs were pretty good; is Sleeping Monkey a new tune? I had never
heard it before (but then again I had also never heard Hall and Solace or Paul
and Silas or whatever the hell it's really called, and I know that that's not a
new one)

- rich

p.s. have they done away with the trampolines? i hope not; i read on the net
about them giving them away at some show, but i assumed they had just upgraded
to a different model; were there any trampolines at portsmouth (or new years)?
there weren't any sights of them last nite

Subject: Early Keene start

Some mentioned how early the Keene show started.... This was NOT done
on purpose. Someone was talking to Chris or Paul about house lights
when all of a sudden, one of Keene dupes said "House lights?!" "HEY!!
HIT THE HOUSE LIGHTS!" So the lights go out, and everyone's freakin
out backstage "Huh? What? We're on? Shit. come on! We're on..."

Subject: End of Keene Stories!!

The second set was IMHO not as good as the first. For evidence, I
would say that since people had a harder than usual time being quiet
during the a capella parts, and since people were clapping to Fishman's
quiet vocal section of Sleeping Monkey (Judging from Trey's scowl,
I don't think they were quite pleased...!) I think that people hadn't
danced quite enough!!

It started out on the right foot, though with a really hot Llama. Again,
watch Page on those keys! I usually get too caught up in Trey's Crazy
Fingers to watch, but Page blew me away.

As someone else mentioned (Rich..?) Fish took a bagpipe solo using the
vaccuum to inflate it. Perhaps his funniest moment was when he
suddenly leaned back and blew the notes right into the mic. See,
up to this point, he had played without amplification, so people
were really quiet. Then suddenly he puts it to the mic, and there
is this loud, awful shriek (people covered their ears and writhed in
pain!). Then he plays fast and furious, wagging his toungue back
and forth like he's Gene Simmons or someone. As with the Portsmouth
shows, the 'Henrietta Intro' was "Cold as Ice" (Foreigner, for all
you other Rochester natives out there).

In the encore, they did two a cappella, a microphona songs: Memories
and Carolina. As they put their instruments down, Mike knocked his
life-size poster of Kathleen Turner as VI Krushevzxwqwqsas (whatever,
I can't even say it...) over. This poster was mounted on top of his
bass cabinet, and when the lights were on Mike's mom's sheets in the
back, all you could see was the outline of it. So the stage looked
like silhouettes of Page, Trey, Really Tall Woman With A Gun, Fish.
Anyway, Mike couldn't get this cardboard poster back up, so he handed
it to Fish, who took it under his arm. It looked like he had this hot
babe under his arm, with a bottle of water in the other.

Then, Trey says, "Ok, hopefully we have some new arrangments of songs.
See, Page just got this new apartment, and his landlord--" And then
everyone starts cheering because Mike has folded the head of the poster
back and is holding the poster in front of his body. So they goof around
some more. Finally, someone yells, "And so Page just moved in..." And
Trey says, "Yeah. Page just moved into this new apartment and his land-
lord is a judge of a capella groups, so hopefully we'll have some new
arrangments." It took them two tries to start Carolina because Fish
screwed up.

All in all, Phish seemed to be really in the Groove in the first set,
but the crowd certainly outdid them in energy!

OH yeah...another name that has been used for Fishman on my Williams
College bootleg is at the end of My Sweet One. Trey says, "Thank you.
A little Ditty written by our drummer, Moses Brown."
