I remember it like it was yesterday. It was my first chance to finally see
Phish. Being in High School in Vermont and not having a car to even drive
the 60 miles to Burlington had impeded my earlier opportunities to see shows
but I'd been listening diligently for over a year & a half so when my
girlfriend asked me if I wanted to go up to Stowe to see Santana with Phish,
naturally I jumped at the chance.
We loaded up the car with about seven people and drove up to Stowe Mountain.
Upon arrival, we made our way to the box office to get tickets (those were
the days when you could still get good seats at the door on the day of the
show). As it happened a guy came up to me and asked me if I needed a ticket.
So I bought my first Phish ticket for fifteen dollars. As we made our way to
the gates, I said goodbye to some of my friends who had lawn seats. We all
went to our different seats (We had different Tickets) My s.o. & her friend
stopped at their seats about twenty rows back. My seats were furter up. As
it turned out, the ticket that I had bought for fifteen bucks was a third
row, center seat!!! I was psyched, this was going to be the shit!
The band came out around 7:00 and went into Runaway Jim. I had only heard
this song once before on a tape and was excited to see it live. Everywhere
around me people were screaming the chorus in unison with Trey. Foam came
next and I thought it was much better live than on Junta. Then Sparkle, I
had never heard this song before and the "Laughing, Laughing, Fall Apart"
lines fit the mood perfectly. Everyone was on their feet. Stash came next
and at the time, this was my favorite song. It was absolutly beautiful. I
met up with my friend Peter during the Stash, he had snuck in past security
into the reserved seats. This was his favorite tune as well, so it was
fitting that we'd found each other during it. I had no idea what the next
tune was. Someone told me it was called Rift and that it was pretty new. I
thought it was cool. It certainly got the crowd moving.
Meanwhile, being only 3 rows back, I noticed a guy sitting off to the left
of the stage, sitting on a speaker in a yellow bandana & a tie-dyed tanktop
just groovin' along, boppin' his head, & diggin' the music. Yes, it was none
other than Carlos Santana. When Rift was over, He was on his feet clapping
as hard as the rest of us. Trey said something to him and he dissappeared
into the wings. Then they went into You Enjoy Myself. I had always loved
this tune and it was a treat to hear it at my first show. Right before the
part where they bring out the tramps nowadays, Santana walked out onstage
carrying his PRS and Smiled at Trey. They'd been touring together for a
while now and I guess since this was their home turf, Santana decided that
he'd make this show special and grace us with his presence. I remember Trey
facing him trying to show him the chords of the tune and Carlos being lost
for a few minutes untill they went into the jam. Then, it was just a flying
duel on guitars. Trey and Carlos trading licks with such ferocity that one
tended to be a bit awestruck. Then, Santana's drummers came out and did a
drum jam with Fishman. Imagine, Drumz at a Phish show!! It was crazy. Trey
and Santana then went into an Allman's theme and brought YEM to a sensational
finale. Without hesitation, Trey then went into the fastest Llama I have
ever heard to this day. Santana hung out for this one as well laying some
nice solos over it. A blistering version by anyone's standards. After it
was done, Trey said, "Well, it looks like they're going to let us play one
more tune" and with that they went into Funky Bitch. I had no Idea what
this tune was and it was almost a year before I found out it's name, but it
was insane just the same. Blues tunes leave a lot of room for jamming and
Trey and Carlos filled the room. All in all a Phenomenol show.
Phish came out during Santana's set as well for about a half hour, but I
haven't been able to find tapes of it. After the show, we hung out in the
lot for a while, just blown away. I also had my first experience with
those funny balloons that make you fall down, a reoccuring theme at most
shows. Ever since that night, the world has never been quite the same.

Greetings from a beautiful Green Mountain day.....Here is my
report from the *killer* Phish/Santana show at Stowe Mountain
Performing Arts Center. Sorry for the delay but my link to
the net has been waydown.

7/25/92
Runaway Jim
Falling Into A Deep Well
Sparkle
Stash
Rift
You Enjoy Myself *+
Llama *
Phunky Bitch *

Time: Approx....1 hour 5 minutes
*  - with Carlos Santana
*+ - with Carlos and Santana percussion section

HOTHOTHOT.....Had a wonderful time hanging in the lot nestled into the
mountains during the day quaffing Long Trail Ale and having a generally
excellent time. MVP goes to my son Aidan (9 mos. 18 days) who was
attending
his first post-birth show. Townsend 91 was #1, but in utero........
He fully enjoyed all of the attention given him by passerbys and all of
the
stimulus that surrounded him. There was *that* electricity in the air
that
surrounds a home show and we were certainly rewarded with a A+++++++ time.
If anyone saw the electric Santa Claus blowing bubbles....that was us.

Found a nice spot up on the hill and awaited the 7 o'clock hour. We had
hoped
for a longer set than the tour's norm since it was home. The band came
out right at 7 to a boisterous welcome and launched right into a joyous
Runaway Jim that certainly set the tone nicely. Aidan enjoyed romping in
the
backpack and all was well as Phish did their stuff. Everything was great
so
I won't get into details.........During the vocals on YEM, Carlos wandered
onto the stage much to everyones disbelief and PLUGGED in!! Needless to
say,
the jam out of the vocals was phucking incredible. It seemed that the
only
way YEM was going to end was with the stage in flaming ruins and the
mountains
crumbling. *sick*..... This went on for some time and was truly spine
tingling
as the two guitar gods left nothing unsaid. A sweet Llama followed with
Carlos adding his trademark touch (does it seem to anyone else that
anything
this man does, it turns to gold?....simply awesome) to this rocker. Mike
closed the set out with a romp through Funky Bitch and we were left dazed
and with tongues wagging. The conversations during the break contained
alot
of superlatives followed by periods of silence trying to sort out the bad
craziness that had just gone down.

Sanatana came out and did their thing which was incredible as well. We
had
heard that Trey had been joining Carlos and company for a few tunes but
did
not expect all of Phish to be brought out. Had this been done at any of
the
pre 7/25 shows???? Carlos had just finished about an hour of his set when
he welcomed "the homeboys" back out onto the stage. It was a funny moment
when Carlos called them homeboys. This jam lasted a way long time with
Carlos and Trey trading licks, Jon taking a rather lengthy talking drum
solo
(which I might add he was quite psyched about as I saw him disappear
behind
the stage pumping his arms afterwards), Page and Chester grooving
together,
Mike standing on the riser looking quite flourescent, Trey *leading* the
band after some prodding by Carlos, Carlos and Trey trading licks,
jamjamjam,
no "Exodus" tonight, more jamming, some extracurricular jaw-dropping
jamming
into a beautiful reading of "Summertime"........simply awesome. Phish
took a bow with hugs all around and left the stage. I cannot recall
how long this went on but it seemed like it would never end. Santana
did not play Black Magic Woman>Gypsy Queen>Oye Como Va, so Phish might
have gotten a larger slot during the Santana set (45 minutes) than the
rest of the tour saw. The Santana set then followed what has been posted
earlier through Jingo and the show was over.......sweet................
The band was obviously psyched and proud to have grooved on the stage with
Santana in front of the home crowd.

Now, I am in awe of Trey's prowess on the axe, but must disagree about and
earlier post saying that Trey had blown Santana away during their jam
together
somewhere down south (Merriweather, GSAC, Jones Beach???). Hearing them
play
together and my take is this......"Hmmm Trey is very good....Oooh Carlos
is
very very good" Know what I mean? For you bluegrass fans out there,
think of
it as this Trey -> Wyatt Rice Carlos -> Tony Rice.

Aidan (my son) had a great time......not a peep out of him all night
except
for screams of delight. We had procured some quality earplugs and he
loved
the sensory input of the dancing masses, the light show, the nice smiles
he
was given, and the starry night. AND I have discovered the way to get
just
about anything into a show.....BABY BAGS.....we had 4 oranges, a full
bottle
of cold water buried into the bag under diapers, toys, baby bottles, etc.
We were passed through the gates with only a cursory glance into the bag.
BTW...he only started to cry when we headed off the mountain and slept in
the
next morning like a true partyanimal.

Quiet mode on......the above mentioned show has been captured on magnetic
media by a friend using clip on mic's. I have heard this effort and the
sound
is reasonable considering the stealth nature of the endeavor. 'nuff said.

All in all, it was a show for the ages and I was not disappointed by
lack of Phish. Beautiful venue....Allman Brothers on Friday August 21.
It would be a nice place for a Phish headline gig....HINT

Later on my sisters and brothers....Jay

Cubs......if it takes forever
