From: john powell Subject: Phish at Deer Creek -- Friday, August 12th 1996 hhmmmmm.... Looking back on Deer Creek... What pisses me off is that I can't remember more than half of what went on during the shows, forgetting most of what the band was doing, like, during songs that I liked most ..Esther in particular. (only 1 of 2 that they played all summer). I told myself i'd give all my attention to the stage the whole time, as much as possible. No dice. I find that it is hard to concentrate on one thing when I am as inebriated as i was. I wasnt so tore up the second night, though. For my fourth and fifth phish shows...when considering all factors I can conclude that the shows kicked large amt. of asses. I would say that the second night kicked more ass than the first, though, even though the first still packed a big punch when I consider Esther and Weigh, being two songs that were at the top of my request list way up in the back of my head. McGrupp was a real treat, too. The Oh kee pa-->Suzie was the same transition they played at Ft. Collins, CO (11/4/90). I just found out. cool. They know how to close the set. They rule. I enjoyed Timber Ho! a whole lot. I think it was a jammin set opener. Real powerful vocals/lyrics...it was another first for me. Others I was with didnt seem to have as much of an interest in this one. oh well. DUH..DUH..DUH...OK> SParkle..Simple..Caspian.. McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters..Antelope..Ragtime Gal..Golgi..Possum. Here's rest of the 2nd set. It's ass-kicking status speaks for itself. It was the only time they played McGrupp all summer. I thought they were gonna go right into Lizards but no dice. the Watchful Hosemasters was the Lizards lead-in, partially. They jammed on that part. I beleive I understand about the Watchful Hosemasters because that Esther jam (Lizards lead-in) went into something else ...some other area of jamming. I can't quite recall how it went though. yeah. Thanks phish for playing Esther and Weigh and like Pince Caspian and uh... the rest of this show, too. at the only summer show I could go to. rule. ok. Here's a different format. 8/12/96 SET I times heard last heard Ya mar : rules as an opener 2nd 4/26/96 trey and mike--excellent vocals (I think....) S.O.A.Melt : took me by surprise 2nd 10/29/95 they plunged below the waterline. (after breathing deep in a steam dream) that harmony section was very tight. Esther : and the doll were set adrift 1st I liked the way they started it. It didnt take me long to realize what song it was ..but...i dont remember much from there...and that is the height of stuff that sucks. Chalkdust: uh, Chalkdust. 1st (all I can recall is that they played it and that was cool) Weigh : I really wanted to hear 1st this one..and I did. (i'm pretty sure...) nice piano work by the man on the left ooh yeah. Its Ice : wasnt on my request list 2nd 10/29/95 nice jamming between page and the rest of the band in middle section. it seemed that they did that jamming that they usually do. (hanging on the other side of the key and then going back to end the song.) ooh yeah. again Dog Faced Boy : uh.... yeah. 1st (uh...i didnt expect this one. I cannot complain though. so I wont. It was pretty cool.) Taste : I do not recall any 1st of this song. Maybe I will when I hear the tape?.... Oh kee pa : was cool. 1st | (again, I recall very | little.) \ / Suzie Greenberg : awesome jam 1st this song rules. phish never ceases to surprise me with other cool jams. (another first for me.) Setbreak: Trey proclaims that they will be back in "16 minutes" 3 times. (they were back in about 30) It was the same lie he told last year except he didn't say it 3 times, although he did put emphasis on "16 minutes.." last year. (on 6/19/95 they came back after about 40 minutes). Pretty funny, Trey. Next time you say that i'll be there timing you w/chronometer. yeah.(so what. right?) see you at Rupp. SET II times heard last heard Timber Ho! : I liked this one 1st ....yeah. powerful vocal notes. good set opener. Sparkle*: uh...hmmm. 3rd 4/26/96 it was real, real fast. 6/19/95 you know, at the end there.... how do they not lose it? I lost my feet. Simple*: was cool. 2nd 6/19/95 extended jam.. usual amt. of ass kicking. nothing beyond the realm of things that rule though. Prince Caspian : another first for me 1st They played it good. Only other caspian I have heard:(red rocks 6/10/95;i wasnt there i just have the tape) McGrupp and the Watchful 1st Hosemasters : OOOHHHH YEAH. this was cool. I was ready for Lizards following McGrupp. Page jammed the lead-in chords (esther format) but no lizards...watchful hosemasters instead. (8/13 covered the land of darkness and doom...) It was cool. Antelope* : uh...what should I say. 2nd 6/19/95 ...hmmmm.. i've already used the words cool, rule, kick-ass... I hereby decree that the word "antelope" be made synonymous with the word "rule." yeah. I think last years antelope kicked more ass, though. (6/19/95) Ragtime Gal : a capella 1st ooh yeah. uh... I cant quite remember>:-( Golgi Apparatus : uh....Ticket stubs??? 1st don't remember much. I would say that it kicked usual large amnt. of asses. it was especially cool 'cause it was another 1st for me. yeah. Possum * : like antelope, last years 3rd 10/29/95 possum was more cool 6/19/95 (6/19/95). when I get the tapes, I will make a more accurate determination of the status comparison of these two performances of possum. yeah. If it has one of those *s by it it means phish also played this song last year at Deer Creek. uh...like add stuff to this if you want, somebody.
