Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California 8/29/92

Chalkdust Torture
Rift
Bouncing Around the Room
Maze
You Enjoy Myself

The set was about 40 minutes, including the nice long YEM (great vocal
jam!). I've been trying to remember if there was possibly another song
after Maze and before YEM...I don't think so. Though it was short, this
was the best Phish-opening-for-Santana set I've seen so far (of five).

The in-venue video display at Shoreline was *very* nicely done. I was
much impressed by the video controller's ability to pick up quickly on
the nuances of what I would guess were to that person totally unfamiliar
songs - for example, switching the display back and forth between Page
and Trey as they alternated vocals on Rift. Being in such a large venue
where it was difficult to actually see the performers from many areas, the
video displays really added a lot.

Time to sleep...12 hours till Cal Expo(!)...

Santana/Phish, Shoreline Ampitheatre, Mountain View, CA, Saturday, August
29th

Chalkdust Torture
Rift
Bouncing Around the Room
Maze
You Enjoy Myself

Nice opening set... 'Maze' was the highlight for me. 'YEM' had its
moments
too, though I thought the transition into the vocal jam was kinda rough.
'Bouncing...' was tight.

Trampolines were utilized during 'YEM', but not for long... Trey
fell off his and that quickly ended the bouncing. No audience
participation signals.

Santana's set was similar to last night's... Even most of the same special
guests showed up (I caught the sax player's name this time: Marsha.
Carlos said something about her being the teacher of his kids).
We got an extra vocalist on 'Make Somebody Happy.' Five, and then
seven kids on stage, rather than last night's three. 'Europa'
was moved from the middle of the extended encores to the 5th or 6th
tune, after the first big drum solo. We also got a tune from
Santana III (that I don't know the name of) which they didn't play
last night. Trey, Page, Fish, & Mike came out and jammed with
Marsha and Santana for 2 tunes. Marsha then stayed for the rest
of the set.

Fashion report:) Trey in a cool black and purple dress shirt,
Mike in white and blue, and Fish in his dress.

Time to muster the energy to do it all over again tomorrow at
Sacramento's Cal-Expo... (after 5 concerts in 54 hours!).

Yeah, Shoreline's in-house video staff are aMAZEing. They didn't
really use their digital video effects tonight, but when the
(heaven forbid! ;^) Grateful Dead play there, they create some
mind-bending visuals.

We were sitting up front, but I still spent a lot of time staring
at the screen, trying to watch Trey's fingers fly across the fretboard.

Shelly's and Carl's posts related the highlights of the show, but here's
my
$0.02 anyhow:

I talked a few of my friends from Fairfax, CA, into going to see
Phish/Santana, and amazingly enough, they managed to buy tickets
for reserved seating just minutes before the show began.
Unfortunately, security was pretty strict about checking tickets
and making sure that people sat in their designated seating, which
meant that I had to sit by myself. :-(. So I go to my seat feeling
dejected and lonely and all when who do I spot several rows in
front of me other than fellow netters Shelly and Matt, and a friend
from my college days at UMass who, as it turns out, is a friend of
theirs. It's always nice to meet the faces behind the posts and
doubly nice to bump into friends you last saw some 3,000 miles
away.

Phish's set was amazing, although no amount of discussion about the
length of their set could prepare me for the shock of them walking
off stage after only 45 minutes or so. Still, I'm happy I went and
only wish I could be in Sacramento for tonight's show.

As expected, all four of the boys joined Santana on stage, and
there were points when I couldn't tell who was taking the leads --
Carlos or Trey. The large-screen TV really captured the joy and
elation on Trey's face as he played with Carlos. I got to talking
with some people sitting near me who were wondering what the weird
guttural, scat-like sounds were, and I'm not sure they believed me
when I told them it was the drummer from Phish playing his much-
cherished Electrolux vacuum cleaner.

The more I go see these guys play the more I realize how much more
meaningful they make my existence.

Maybe in ten years we'll be treated to Santana opening for Phish.
I
went, of course, to see Phish (Santana's great, but I was born after he
was in
his prime) and felt dejected as soon as Phish left the stage. I'm only
glad I was treated to the San Juan Cap show two weeks before.

Did you notice the crowd's reaction during YEM when Phish broke
into (I think) Black Magic Woman sounding EXACTLY like Santana does it?
That made my night... I bet everybody who couldn't see the stage thought
Santana had started playing :-)
