After reading some of the press on this tour, I was very curious and excited
upon arriving at the Greek in Berkeley. I just saw the two of the Phil and
Friends shows and just love the vibe of this venue - having Phish here in
1993, great memories abound, and I was far from disappointed last night!
 
I don't know the names of the tunes (does anyone?), but let's just say that
the band SMOKES! I was surpirsed at the ska - a touch of Fishbone and a
splash of Oingo Boingo had the place shakin' bones from beginning to end.
Stellar alto sax solos - inspired trombone, trumpet and tenor solos too.
Trey had fire in his belly on many tunes - that guitar just roared at times,
but also lots of lovely subtleties in Trey's playing. Loved the tune about
"Being Alive" and "Or/A" was way cool, too. Hope to see some more kind faces
tonite - you are in for a treat. I won't even compare it to Phish - this is
a different playing field altogether!

Trey continues to show why Phish isn't getting back together anytime soon.
The month of rehersals is really paying off as the band seemed more polished
than when I saw them at the Fox in March.  They blending of genres shows why
this is American music at its best.  Funk, Reggae, Carribean, juju, and
improvisational rock just pour out of this group like a waterfall over
Niagra.  Kuroda was also in top form as the light show seemed more advanced
and exspansive.  This group is making heads turn as Trey is playing with more
emotion and ferver than I have seen since Phish '97-'98.  Here's my setlist
for Friday(it may not be complete)
 
Burlap Sack and Pumps, Moesha, Summer is Commin',  Acting like the Devil?,
Alive again, Windora Bug, Last Tube.
 
Set 2:  Money,Love and Change, Noodle Rave Daddio, Every Story has a Stone,

Friday Night was a good show for my first Trey Solo Band show.  I was
surprised by how little of the spotlight Trey took and how many solos the
horns took vs. the guitar.  His band is tight and well rehearsed.  The music
is designed to keep the place dancing, very much in the same manner as Karl
Denson's Tiny Universe, but the musical experimentation that attracted so
many people to Phish is lacking.  The bass was steady and danceable, but it's
not much surprise that a bassist the caliber of Mike Gordon would soon tire
of playing the same bass line for 20 minutes.  The keys were practically
non-existent in terms of their impact on the show - more sound fill than
anything.  I danced all night, but in retrospect I can only recall about 2
solos from the man of the hour that were moving or unique.  I was also
surprised at the lack of talking to the audience and no introductions for the
band.  The horns are as good as I've heard a sectio! ! n sound for a while,
and the drummer is fun, but again almost every song is in 4/4 which leaves
little room to really showcase one's talent.  All in all, I'm very happy I
went and would recommend it to anybody looking to dance the night away this
summer, but I wouldn't plan on many shows.  The limitations of this band are
noticeable.  If you go don't expect anything like Phish except the fun
environment.  Thanks for a real good time.

Simply the best.  Not in the Tina Turner sense.   Exceeded just about
everyone's expectations, actually blew everyone away.
 
Trey's band is a cross between The Band, The Meters, Phish, Bob Marley, the
Glenn Miller Band, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Sublime, Red Hot
Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and the Talking Heads.
