11/27/96 Key Arena, Seattle, WA **DISEEEZER** Diseeezer kicks in after
a frighteningly Whacked Out Scent.
WOW!!! This Tweezer is definitely slower than usual by at least a whole
beat!! This is going to be
funnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkaaaaayy, I can feel it. (I hope your deck isn't
playing games, ZZYZX.. thanks, I hope, for the tapes..
;-). Anyway, the very opening of this Tweezer is not only more slow
than I think it ever has been played, but it is surprisingly
jazzed up! Lyrics standard.. the vocals don't sound slowed down. Hmmm.
Is this really THIS laid back?!? The little "jam
segment" in the opening lyrics segment contains some twangs of some
sort and some modest clavinet action from Page. Nothing
crazy. Typical chaos on "Ebeneezer" but no screaming.. Jam segment
kicks in at 5:19, which is 49 seconds beyond when it
usually begins (roughly). 49 seconds. This Tweezer is soooooooo sllllllooooowwww.
IS THIS RIGHT!?!?!? Damn. The vocals
sounded fine. Christ. Could someone time their copy of this Tweezer?
Tell me when they say "Ebeneezer" (should be in the
vicinity of 5 minutes). Please? I'm concerned.. The jam opens up with
Trey soloing very low on the 'doc. He's almost
painstakingly noodling ... as if searching for a melodious theme. Mike
is funky and drippy.. riiich, milky bass riffs. Trey's soloing
is very patient, but muddy, like this whole sllloooooow groove. Around
7:43 Fish picks it up a bit and Trey leaps into the upper
reaches of the 'doc, soloing Kindly. Page accompanies forcefully on
the piano, pounding out typically tweezeresque chords. At
8:30 Trey starts jamming a bit more funkily, and repetitively, and
Fish appears to slightly speed up the jam. VERY Slightly.
DAMN!! Trey lets loose with some nice mellifluous licks before returning
to a funky, repetitive groove. Mike is funnnnnnnking
looooow in support. What a dark groove. Slllow... At around 10 minutes
Trey starts chording and sustaining rather sinisterly, as
if preparing everyone for Take Off!!!!!! Cool!!!!!! Mike starts teasing
Sweet Emotion big time (10:30), Trey hears him and then
starts some Sweet Emotion-like chords. Not quite there yet, though.
This is a GRRRRRRREAAT BUILD!!! And then at 11:07
Trey sings "Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Emooooooooooooooooootioonnnnnnnnn,"
and repeats that a few times. GOD I
love jams like this. Who said that Phish couldn't rock and roll!?!?
Trey beings passionately soloing in the upper reaches of the
'doc around 12:15, and then slllowly starts hinting at the DWD theme,
steadily hinting at it and playing it! And then at 12:50 Fish
ABRUPTLY leaps out of the sllllow Tweezer groove into a DWD jam. ("You
want to fuckin play DWD now, Trey?!? Ok..")
Fish really ruins this segue, imo. This is complete crap next to the
segue into NICU out of the DWD of 8/16/96, for example.
Anyway.. It sounded at first (13:30) that they'd just close DWD by
singing the final "Waiting for the time.." lyrics. But, no. They
erupt into another RAGING DWD JAM!!!! =^] =^] Wow. (wipes brow) To
have been at this damn show.. by this point I
would have this HUUUGE (15:40) shit-eating grin on my face, and sweat
would be pouring off me as I danced danced
danced!!! Yes!!!! This doesn't last too long, however.. WWOOOO-HOOO!!!
At 16:20 THEY CLOSE THE JAM WITH
'CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKIN''S ENDING!!!!!!! (they closed a couple Fall
1994 Weekapaugs with Can't You Hear
Me Knockin (excellent Stones tune)'s ending) YESSSSS!!!!!!!! Well,
this was the *heaviest* DISEEEEZER I've heard all year
for sure. :-] 8.0 rating. Lotsa hose. Damn. (Ok, I enjoyed the Gainesville
Tweezer's FUNK more) If the first few minutes had
been more upbeat and melodious, and if Fish had segued a lot more skillfully
into DWD, then this would be a 9-10.0 for sure
imo. The 11/2/96 Tweezer is MORE FUNKY, and the Red Rocks 1996 Tweezer
is MORE PRETTY.. but this still rages!
RAGES!! *****RAAAAGES!!!!!***** And incredibly Curious version.. I
really want to have a cigarrette now.. AGH!!!!
"This is the story of Guelah Papyrus.." Just keep singing it.. agh.
Man. What a JAM!!!!! You can kiss my TYPE ONE
JAMMING BUTT, what's your name.. uh.. that guy..!! YEAH, YOU!! ;-)
(just kiddin JF...;) And hey, ZZYZX, thank you!
The tape speed is obviously fine. I shouldn't have been fooled. This
Tweezer really did start slllowwwwly. Incredibly slllowwly.
More slowly than I've ever heard it. A LOT MORE, actually. WHY WASN'T
I WARNED!? WHAT THE HELL IS
WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?? WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME!?! two cents charlie
p.s. Get the 11/27/96
SECOND SET!!!! Wow!! And to think I was impressed by Sacramento...
;) Sacto IS a great SHOW.. but. You don't see me
reviewing of an hour of that, do ya? No...
