5/7/93 Bangor Municipal, Bangor, ME Someone recently spoke of the merits
of this somewhat-rare show, and there are
several merits (Hood's nice, for one). Nice spacey pre-Nirvana build,
with a modest vibration of life effect. Quite a pleasant
opening all around, even though people in the audience start clapping
along with Page just before Nirvana, which occurs at
3:24. A reasonable Nirvana segment, and then Mike's solo section at
4:07, and Mike sends out a divine groove -- very elegant
and melodious. Very nice sustain on THE NOTE from Trey (first shot
at it), during the pre-charge section (otherwise textbook
version -- very well played). Second shot at The Note at 6:15 isn't
sustained as well, but the jamming about it is good. Charge
at around 6:32 or so, then BOY at 6:49. Great stuff from Page throughout
this BMGS/WUDMTF section. Opening up the
tramps jam is a quote from Page of the Mission Impossible theme (and
another quote..). (bad cut to side B in the tramps jam on
my copy -- not much gone at all, though) Jam segment at around 10:37,
and Trey screws around with Mission Impossible as
well, quoting it severely in the opening. Trey gets quite groovy, and
the interplay between him and the other band members,
especially Mike, is great! Trey quickly repeats this one riff quite
a bit that the other band members accompany superbly...
before Trey takes off in typically Santana-esque (Oye Como Va, really)
YEM jam segment fashion. No Santana quotes, but
Trey's style in here is obviously Santana, until around 12:55 or so,
when Trey leads the whole band on a quick "Who Knows"
(Hendrix) jam. The key changes, taboot, but the change doesn't make
this uptempo, repetitive "Who Knows" quoting any more
exciting. Trey starts noodling away out of this groove at almost 14
mins, and there's some sweet accompaniment from Fish
(minimalist but funKAY). Jam slows way down at around 14:40, and kinda
drops out briefly, before Fish kicks out a slow
sllllaaaaaaakeee groove (and Mike funks waaay out, with some nice bluesy
licks from Trey). This slow bluesy jam steadily
climbs and builds into a fiery, Hose-like JAM at around 16 minutes.
This ain't your typical YEM jam in here around 16:30 at all
(too quick and "What the -!?"). But Fish soon drops this quick groove
and dives back into bluesy fun at 17 minutes, and joins
Mike for the B&D segment. (no Page or Trey in here) An extremely
melodious, soul-full and righteous B&D segment!!! Closing
WUDMTF segment at 18:18. Vocal jam kicks in at 18:36 rather slloowlly.
There's some quoting of "Bonanza" in here (old
Western y'all would recognize the theme to, but may not know as "Bonanza")
for a lil bit. Kinda dull otherwise, though. Total
time 22:05, when Great Gig in the Sky (initiated by Page, naturally)
segues out of the vocal jam. B rating for this very good
YEM (too bad the vocal jam wasn't better, though, imo).
