Subject: 11/17/97 You Enjoy Myself

11/17/97 McNichols Arena, Denver, CO

Rumor had it that this show was going to be made into a live CD, but I
don't think that's going to happen. Didn't it say in the Schvice that
it would be an east coast Fall 1997 gig? Maybe 11/22 Hampton's second
set, if they knew what was good for us. ;)

YEM opens in typical fashion.. no surprises here. Nirvana at 3:14..
great Page as usual. Mike's solo section at 3:58 doesn't do much,
even though he employs an unusual effect. Trey solos well after his
first shot at The Note, but he doesn't sustain the second Note (6
mins) very well.

"Boy" at 6:33 after a good scream. The crowd is INTO IT.. WUDMTF
segment is good but looooose. Trey noodles around far more than usual
in the fills. Tramps jam at 8:47 or something. Crowd gets excited
for the trampolines activity (Mike doesn't simply signal for the moves
but plays along with Page!). Page's soloing on the Hammond is good,
but nothing more impressive than usual. Phaaaat notes from Mike in
accompaniment. Trey plays along too, subtly. Fish continues to kick
out a standard YEM groove... Difficult to place a clear beginning to
the jam segment, since Trey's just playing along, and not taking a
lead.

Jam segment basically begins at 11:25 or so, with everyone continuing
to funk along as they had during the tramps jam. Excellent interplay
between the band members, but there's no theme or lead from Trey,
really. He's just grooving along with the others...

At 13 mins, there's a strong funky jam (with HEAVY MIKE! Mike's very
active in here). Page appears to employ an unusual effect in here and
sustain a note.. Moog activity. Trey's playing is still
complementary, though.. no lead. Nevertheless, the band members are
clearly listening to each other -- great interplay. Around 14:30 Trey
starts repeating a riff involving two chords.. Mike is still just
TEARING IT UP, by the way. Page continues to sustain chords in
accompaniment..

At around 15:45 I thought Trey would be soloing, but he doesn't.. he
continues to just funk along rhythmically with the others. Jam cools
off around 16:15, and gets progressively more quiet. Mellow, wistful
chords from Page in the background. Everyone quiets down, and then
someone starts quietly vocal-jamming along (17:15) with this groove.
Others join in softly. By 17:41, there's just soft, very soft, eerily
harmonious vocal jamming over a wee bit of soft snare from Fish...
Fish continues to play along in the background until around 18:45.

Vocal jam continues to softly progess and build.. crowd gets very
excited, but I'm not entirely sure Why. Because this isn't unduly
inspiring as far as vocal jams go, in my opinion. This YEM also
wasn't unusually inspiring. Total time 21:49. Similar to several
other 1997 YEM's, there wasn't any B&D section or closing WUDTMF
lyrics before the vocal jam.

Most of the YEM's I've heard from the last several years have far more
inspiring jam segments than this version did. B- rating. I really
hope this show doesn't get put on CD, because there's plenty of more
inspiring Fall 1997 Phish out there. I *LOVE* the Jam out of the
JBGoode of this show, of course.. and it'd be great to have that on
CD. But this whole show?? A waste imo.. Put the 11/28/97 YEM on the
damn CD instead. It kicks this version's butt. (or the 11/22/97
Hampton second set!!!)
